Is Immersive Translate worth it?

Updated

Not for most people who read web pages in one browser. The free tier covers casual use up to a daily request limit, and Pro is reported at $79.99 a year. It pays off if you need ePub, scanned PDFs, a choice of engines or a phone app.

Add to Edge, free

Google Chrome 138 or later, or a Chromium browser with the built-in Translator API, on desktop. No account, no API key.

What you get for free

Immersive Translate lets you translate for free, up to a daily limit on requests. Its pricing page calls the limit “reasonable” and says registering raises it. It does not give a number, so you find out where it is by hitting it. For a few articles a day that may never happen. For a long PDF or a day of research, it can.

What a paid plan adds

Reports put Pro at $9.99 a month or $79.99 a year. What the money buys is breadth: a choice among more than 20 engines, including AI models, quotas for documents and video, and support for formats such as ePub and scanned PDFs. If you need those, the price is fair for a tool that does a lot. If you read web pages in one browser, you may be paying for engines you never switch to.

Who should pay

Who can skip it

If you read web pages in Chrome on a desktop and want two languages on screen, Twinread is free for pages and selections, with no daily request limit and no account. The text goes to Chrome’s translator on your computer. Pro is €5 for a month, €39 for a year or €69 once, as one-time passes that do not renew, and you get 7 days of Pro to try it. Twinread keeps growing from what readers ask for, and the roadmap page takes suggestions.
