What the extension does

It translates the web page you are reading, text you select on it, or text you type in a field, into another language, and shows the result on the page. The translating is done by the translator that is built into Google Chrome (the Translator and LanguageDetector browser APIs), on your computer.

What happens to the text you translate

Nothing leaves your computer. Twinread reads the text of the page in your browser, hands it to Chrome's on-device translator, and puts the result back on the page. It does not send page text, selections, typed text, addresses of the pages you visit or your translations to any server, and it has no analytics, no advertising and no account.

Chrome itself downloads a language model the first time you use a language pair. That download is done by Chrome, from Google, and contains no text from your pages. See Google's documentation of the built-in AI APIs for how Chrome handles it.

Data stored on your computer

• Your settings: languages, display mode and style, the sites on your always-translate and never-translate lists, and your glossary.
• Your Pro licence key and pass end date, if you activate Pro, and the start and end dates of the free trial.
• A translation cache that lives in the page's memory only and is gone when you close or reload the tab.

Settings, licence and trial data live in your browser's extension storage. Uninstalling the extension deletes them.

Data that leaves your computer

Only your licence key, in two cases: when you activate Pro, and at most once a day after that. The key goes to the Twinread API, which checks it with Payhip (the seller of record for Pro passes). Nothing else is sent with it.

Access to websites

At install the extension has no access to any website. It gets access to the tab you click the toolbar icon on, or press its shortcut on, for as long as that page is open. If you switch on "Always translate this site", Chrome asks you for access to that one site, and you can withdraw it by switching the option off.
