Bilingual YouTube subtitles in Chrome
Updated
Turn captions on with the CC button, then switch on Bilingual video subtitles in Twinread. Each caption shows with its translation under it. Free covers 10 minutes a day, and the video must have captions.
Google Chrome 138 or later, or a Chromium browser with the built-in Translator API, on desktop. No account, no API key.
Steps
- Open a video that has captions and turn them on with the CC button.
- Click the Twinread icon and switch on Bilingual video subtitles.
- Choose the language pair, and the subtitle size if the default is too small.
- Play the video. The original caption stays, with the translation under it in a Twinread subtitles box.
What it needs
Captions. Twinread reads the text a site shows as captions, in HTML5 video and on YouTube, and translates that. A video with no captions, or one where the captions are burned into the picture, gives it nothing to read. It needs Chrome 138 or later on a desktop, and the language model downloads once.
The free limit
Free translates 10 minutes of subtitles a day. The popup shows how many minutes are left once subtitles are on. When they run out, ordinary page translation keeps working. Pro, at €5 a month or €39 a year, removes the limit, and a one-time €69 pass covers it for good.
Compared with other tools
Some extensions list bilingual subtitles for several video sites and can generate captions from audio. Twinread does neither. It is the smaller, private option: no account, and the text stays on your machine. Twinread keeps growing from what viewers ask for, and the roadmap page takes suggestions.
Questions
Can I get two-language subtitles on YouTube in Chrome?
Yes, if the video has captions. Turn captions on with the CC button, switch on Bilingual video subtitles in the Twinread popup, and the translation appears under the original line.
Does it work on videos with no captions?
No. It translates captions the site provides and does not listen to the audio.
How much is free?
10 minutes of bilingual subtitles a day. They come back the next day. Pro has no limit.
Where does the translating happen?
On your computer, in Chrome's built-in translator. The caption text is not sent to a Twinread server.
Watch with two languages on screen
Free covers 10 minutes of bilingual subtitles a day. Chrome does the translating on your computer.
Google Chrome 138 or later, or a Chromium browser with the built-in Translator API, on desktop. No account, no API key.
